The day

Field notes

Malavali station on a monsoon morning smells of wet earth and chai. Bhaje village is a twenty minute walk, the waterfall another twenty, and the Buddhist caves sit above it all, cool and silent. The ascent to Visapur is long and open — the plateau feels endless in the mist. Crossing the ridge to Lohagad, the Vinchu Kata tail appears out of the clouds like a spine.

Weather

Monsoon: cool 19–25°C with constant drizzle. Winter mornings are crisp and clear.

Highlights

  • Bhaje waterfall right beside the trail
  • 2,000-year-old Bhaje Leni Buddhist caves
